Meliponiculture

Conservation starts with careful observation.

It started with a simple wish to keep a Jataí colony. Then I discovered an entire world around native stingless bees, and meliponiculture became part of my routine.

01 / Management

Intervene only when there is a reason.

I observe movement, reserves, nest structure, growth and signs of decline. Supplementation, reinforcement, colony division or any other intervention only enters when the colony actually needs it.

A healthy colony is already a success. Production comes later. In an urban environment there are enough challenges that the first commitment is to keep bees strong, protected and surrounded by resources.

02 / Landscape

The boxes are only one part of the system.

I track and catalog flowering plants in my neighborhood, observe how species respond to different seasons and plant with pollinators in mind too.

Conserving native bees means conserving relationships: plants, flowers, food, shelter, local genetics and the ability of each species to remain part of the ecosystem.

03 / Citizen science

Observation can become data too.

I have collaborated with #cidadãoASF, part of the BeeKeep project, a citizen-science initiative focused on monitoring stingless-bee flight activity.

I like this bridge between everyday management and research: small observations, when collected methodically over time, can contribute to broader knowledge about species.

04 / Conservation

Keep diversity alive so it can remain part of the landscape.

Local species

I prioritize species from the region and avoid captures when there is a risk of favoring species that do not belong to the local context.

Genetics

Rarer species also interest me from the perspective of conservation and responsible maintenance of genetic diversity.

Environmental education

Stingless bees are a very concrete way to show people of any age how pollination, food and biodiversity connect.

Future

I want to bring meliponiculture closer to agroecology, agroforestry systems, colony propagation and, when appropriate, responsible reintroduction.
